We’ve All Been There

Originally published on soccerstateofmind.wordpress.com

As players, we’ve all been there. A referee makes a series of bad calls, you get frustrated and decide that your only option is to put him in a choke-hold. As you release the hold, the ref very calmly shows you a red card and then you REALLY get angry. As you attempt to chase the ref down to reapply the hold and finish what you started, your teammates tackle you to the ground before escorting you off the field. Then you quit the team.  We’ve all been there.

OK perhaps we haven’t ALL been there but last Saturday, Jose Pedroso, a Paraguayan defender playing for Chilean second division club Rangers, choked referee Marcelo Miranda. (Video courtesy of YouTube user funnysports2010).

Now if you have crossed a line with the ref or an opponent, you typically realize that, despite your frustration, you were probably in the wrong. That is unless your name is Jose Pedroso.

Pedroso was quoted in the Chilean newspaper La Tercera as saying, “I’m not the least bit sorry.” Hey, give him credit for his honesty.

While we’re at it, kudos to Miranda for being a good sport and not pressing charges.
